The video below is from the old El Sullivan Show.  The object of this lesson plan and strategy is NOT to get your students spinning plates.  I use the "Spinning Plate" a a metaphor for getting the students in your class to begin working independently, and it works great!

Of course, you must begin with the the First Spinning Plate.  Once it is going you start another spinning plate and so on.  I will be sending detailed step by step plans on how to implement this in your classroom.  It is a teacher's and a student's dream come true once they get used it to, which take a bit of time, but it is so worth it!.

I'm so inspired by your dedication to not only the academia of teaching, but also the importance of mentoring young minds - a task many teachers I know sometimes neglect. I would love to see your detailed lesson plans for "The First Spinning Plate" activity. I am excited about the first day of school - I'm buying toilet paper and a rug tomorrow!! Thanks for the inspiration; it's a wonderful thing to be blessed with right before a new school year begins!

Thanks,
Jennifer Flanagan

Anne,
I appreciate the time you devote to addressing 21st century needs. With the core curriculum being aligned and implemented in North Carolina, we need foreward thinkers, like yourself, who inspire and feed our instructional needs. Can't wait to recieve the "spinning plate" idea - already packed a roll of toilet tissue in one of my bags, which will be going back to school with me in a couple of weeks. ,

Your creativity is truly inspiring! As a student teacher who graduates in May, I must admit you are the first person I've come across who has such wonderful ideas about creating community within the classroom. I have great fear and apprehension about my first year as a teacher, but through your lessons come great knowledge and my fears are slowly deflating. Thank you so much for sharing the toilet paper activity! I will be using it and would love the lesson on "The First Spinning Plate." Thank you again! Continue with the great ideas!
